In 2007 Norwich City Council commisioned me to supply
eleven original designs for finials to sit on the top
of bollards sited around the Norwich Lanes area.
The bollards (made of tubular steel and covered in biodegradeable polymer)
are coloured Madder red after the
plant that was used locally in the weaving
trade of the 17th century. The intention of the
project devised by HEART was to promote the area
as an autonomous precinct within the city comprised
of its most attractive lanes and streets. The finial designs
were chosen to reflect some thing of their location, Swan Lane, a Swans head
Angels Gate, a Cherub … For London Street I used a Rams head
to reflect that it had been the Horn working area of the City.
In all there were 22 comprising 12 Madder plant designs (all the same)
and 10 differant location specific finials
The project has been an undoubted success and many people feel
a sense of fondness towards my finials.
