Bylaugh Hall, 2005-8.

In 2005 I was asked to supply decorative plaster to replace the extensively damaged interior of Bylaugh Hall in Norfolk. The Hall had been derelict since the war and was to be brought back to life by its new owner. The work consisted of reproducing longitudinal mouldings , eg architrave, coving, banding etc that I “ran on the bench ” back in the workshop. Many silicon moulds were made in situ of decorated friezes, corbells, dentils etc and a good deal of time was spent piecing together from rubble larger components eg spandrels and capitals. All my work was installed by the plasterer and the hall was returned to its former glory……. unfortunately I didn’t take any photographs! I think because the job had gone on for over 3 years and the novelty had worn off. Much to my regret the Hall changed hands and is again falling into disrepair. The Capital in the photograph is one of 4 that I cast from a mould I made from found pieces, guesswork and measurement…
